Obesity a health problem in Mexico

Currently the world is facing an upward trend in the rates of overweight and obesity, which has resulted in numerous studies that have examined why and the implications of this phenomenon. The World Health Organization indicates that in 2005 it was all around the world about 400 million obese adults (over 15 years) and at least 20 million children under five are overweight. The WHO estimates that by 2015 there will be more than 700 million obese.
In Mexico, obesity has reached levels that placed the country at 2 ° place globally as a percentage of the population with this risk factor. And the problem is not only the impact now, but how has been increasing over the years, because in the past 11 years this indicator has grown almost 50 percent. (Figure).

The graphs below show the statistics obteined from Encuesta Nacional del Nivel de Vida de los Hogares 2006 (ENNVIH). Is a longitudinal survey that collects information from Mexicans in the course of time, with a design representative simple at national and regional levels, as well as urban-rural. In the graphs we can see that in México 42% of the population have this risk factor (owerweight or obesity), 42% are men and 57% women. We can see that within the group that suffers the risk factor, 60% are overweight, 35% obese and 3% extreme obese.
In the third graph we see that approximately 27% of households have 2 or so members who were overweight or obese, and only 7% of households have all their members with a normal weight.
And finally, in the chart that show us the number of people overweight or obese depending on its level of income, we can see that there isn´t a big difference in weight depending on income, this means this is no longer an exclusively problem of people with money and that is growing very fast in low income people.
The Mexican government, like the rest of the world, must act quickly and effectively because although overweight and obesity is a problem in itself, the problem even more serious is that their presence is a risk factor for heart disease as those, hypertension, diabetes, osteoarthritis and female reproductive weak, among others.
