Nobel prize in economics 2012
This year the winners of the prize are two researchers whose work has influenced health systems. Lloyd Shapley, from the theoretical perspective, and Alvin Roth, from the practical perspective, have worked on allocation mechanism when there are not markets. Roth has work extensively on how to efficiently allocate organs (kidneys for example) when there are donors and patients (and of course purchase is prohibited); or how to allocate trainee physician and hospitals. The reasons for the Academy to give the award to these two economist can be read here. Brief readings on the topics can be read on professor Roth blog here
