Chilean aging rate doubles in 20 years becoming the 2nd highest in the region
In the South American region, Uruguay is the only country with a higher aging rate. On the one hand, a higher proportion of old-age population means elevated life expectancy, however there are fewer young people to afford an aging society. Furthermore, most seniors are employed in non-paid works and although the poverty level of this age group has fallen compared to that of 1990, it has remained stagnant at around 9% in the last decade. One of the main aspects discussed is the fact that even though women live longer than men, they retire at a younger age, therefore contributing for a shorter period of time and paid less.
