Universal Insurance Coverage in Mexico

The minister of health in Mexico, José Ángel Cordova Villalobos, announced that due to budget cut to the public spending the Seguro Popular may be affected as it would extended from 2010 to 2012 the goal of providing universal coverage of social security for all Mexicans. In the figure (based on Sinha and Orcí) we compared the original plan of deployment and the current coverage. The original plan is to reach universality in 2010 incorporating 14.3% families each year, although since 2007 the goal was modified to ensure a higher percentage of families. The real evolution until 2008 behaves according to the target, which means that if we continue acting the same way for either the 2010 or 2012, depending on the budget cut, the universal coverage of social security in Mexico could be reached.
