Healthcare system performance: US vs. Europe

In these days, in the United States there are taking place countless discussions regarding the health care system reform. One of the arguments of democrats to have more state involvement in the healthcare sector is that the performance of the Unites States healthcare system --adjusted by cost-- is lower than the performance of European Countries. Nations where the involvement of government is higher. Nobel prize Gary Becker however argue --based on a recent unpublished study of Samuel Preston and Jessica Ho that compare mortality rates for very common breast and prostate cancer -- that the United States has nothing to envy the European countries: in the United States the mortality rates of prostate and  breast cancer (forms of cancer that appear to be less sensitive to known attributes of diet and other kinds of non-medical behavior) are lower than in most countries of Europe, for example France and Sweden, given the better programs of detection and treatment in the United States.
