The first note refers to the expansion of the A-H1N1 virus all over the world. The World Health Organization reported 4,379 cases in 29 countries. In Mexico there are 1,626 possible cases (and 48 deaths confirmed). In the United States there are 2,254, in Canada 280, and in Spain 93 confirmed cases. In the newspaper El Economista we can see a map showing the distribution of cases around the world.
The second is about the unemployment in Mexico during April. La Jornada reports that in April 60,218 jobs were destroyed as registered by the Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social (IMSS). Since the economic crisis was recognized in October, 584,961 people have lost their formal employment. The largest fall was recorded in the manufacturing industry, an industry that generates the greater amount of formal employment in the country.
The third note is about the genome map of the Mexicans discovered by the Instituto Nacional de Medicina Genómica (Inmegen). This is a unique map in Latin America and was done with blood donated by people in different states between 2005 and 2007. The map will provide information for diagnosis and treatment of common diseases among the Mexican population as obesity, diabetes, hypertension, cancer and infectious diseases. The results will be published today by Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS). The information will be available on the basis of global genetic variations in human populations and may serve other Latin American countries that have similar demographic to those of Mexico.
