More on A-H1N1

There are several hypotheses why persons infected with AH1N1 died in Mexico and not in other countries. One possibility that have been raised is the fact the in Mexico people self medicate very often. The National Survey of Health 2006 indicates that out of the persons that were sick during the last two weeks prior the interview, almost 40% did not look for professional care (see first chart below). The main reasons were that persons did not believe it were necessary, or did not have money (see second chart below). This article goes further in analyzing the possible factors associated to the use of self medication. According to the authors, the socioeconomic status, and the lack of access to professional care are among the most important factors that explain self-medication. The authors argue in favor of universal health insurance.
