As discussed in a previous note to expand coverage through a health system reform is an important part of the agenda of president elect Obama. Congress is about to adopt a bill to provide health insurance to millions of low-income children in the United States. It is a project that would cover 10 million children, providing benefits for nearly 4 million who are uninsured.
According to the New York Times, the Democrats proposed to add a major provision that allows states to restore the supply of medical services to legal immigrants under the age of 21 years, since they are currently excluded from Medicaid and the State Children´s Health Insurance Program for five years after the enter the United States. The proposal would give the states the option to insure children and pregnant women, with the federal government subsidizing the costs. They estimate that 400,000 to 600,000 inmmigrant children could benefit from this program.
The reform is of smaller reach to the raised one by Obama, which we described in a previous note.
