Children and social security

This holiday season is very special for children. They are excited about their presents and parents are less hard on them. Nevertheless, recent research has shown that children must be special all days. Heckman and coauthors, among others, have documented that public interventions in toddlers that develop cognitive and not cognitive (interpersonal) abilities are effective to determine academic, labor market success and even his attitude towards criminal activities. Moreover, the authors argue that abilities not acquired at early stage of development cannot be acquired latter in life, even with public interventions. Social security institutions usually play a role in child care, through family allowances or childcare centers. Still, there are many obstacles to overcome in order to make sure that all children receive the appropriate care and training to develop skills they need for a better future.
