Global crisis: (Un) employment

Unfortunately forecasts for the following months suggest a global economic des-acceleration and even recession in some of the countries in the Continent. Along with a lower economic activity we will see loss of formal jobs, although no one can speculate on the magnitude of the impact.

This economic turndown highlights the need for most countries of the Continent to implement unemployment insurance as a social protection program. As can be seen in the following table, only very few countries in the Continent have unemployment insurance programs.

At the CISS we believe that well designed unemployment insurance can be very efficient to avoid important fluctuation in the standard of living of the workers and their families. To read about unemployment and unemployment insurance in the Continent see our Americas Social Security Report 2007, available at http://www.ciss.org.mx/.
